sub⎹div q&a & podcast 5.0: The Librarian

July 23-26 in Squamish, BC will be some fierce-ass good times. Amidst the myriad of summer fests, Bass Coast has our vote for the underdog with some serious appeal. Put together by, you guessed it, The Bass Coast Girls, the gathering is a mesh of music, art, dance, games & all round hedonistic sun-drenched fun.

The lineup is bangin: Megasoid, Max Ulis, Hrdvsion, Djunya, Michael Red, Mat The Alien… and your homeboy Eames will be all up in there pumping that UKFunky yo. We caught up with The Librarian aka Andrea Graham for our latest podcast, plus she managed to answer some of our questions as well… DL & interview after the jump yo…

So BassCoast 2010 – you must be excited? Can you talk a little bit about the history of the BassCoast Girls & how you ladies came up with the idea for the event?

Yes… very excited! We are busy building stages and art installations in prep for our second annual Bass Coast Festival on July 23-26.  It’s now just under a month away! The Bass Coast Girls are Andrea Oakden, Liz Thomson & myself, Andrea Graham. We’ve been good friends since we met in Whistler about ten years ago. We began by collaborating on films, art projects & events in Whistler. We quickly realized we enjoy working together. The idea to host our own festival was inspired after years of attending festivals & cultivating our own ideas. Our own back yard has a lot to offer in terms of a beautiful setting, close proximity to Vancouver & a community overflowing with creativity. When we found the perfect location, we decided it was time to start building Bass Coast Project.

What distinguishes BassCoast from other summery musical romps?

The two factors that set Bass Coast apart from other festivals are the location & the art. The location of Bass Coast is stunning! White sand beaches, a glacial river & a lush forest that’s only a 1 hour drive from Vancouver makes the festival accessible to everyone. On site there is a unique West Coast mountain vibe & an urban edge that creates an element of spontaneity! Our events are full of surprises by way of hidden art, creative stages, cutting edge music, Moroccan tents, mud wrestling & art installations. Everyone who attends adds to this experience. For example, last year a spontaneous party erupted on a sandbar with bagpipers serenading everyone who braved the cold water to join in on the party. It was quite a scene!

Obviously the “Bass” in the name indicates some dubstep leanings – but the lineup this year is quite diverse, from Megasoid to Hrdvsion, there’s a lot of different sounds going on at BassCoast 2010… you must be stoked on the lineup?

We are really excited about the diversity of this year’s line up. It has been carefully curated to represent different styles of electronic music that are pushing the leading edge of underground music culture. Each artist will suit the time of day or night they play & the two different stages will offer differing styles so that the sounds are always fresh. The name is more representative of electronic music as a whole rather than one particular genre. And yes, there is a healthy dose of ‘bass’ to satisfy everyone! More artists to watch for this year are MartyParty, El Papa Chango, Mat The Alien, Djunya, Adham Shaikh & the Funginears!

There’s a lot of non-musical activities to keep people entertained as well right?

There is something for every wild child at Bass Coast, whether it’s the Fashion Project, Music Video Contest, Yoga & Capoeira, Mud Wrestling, Movie Theatre, Oasis Lounge, a workshop, or just chillin on the beach. We’ve added an extra day to the festival because last year the day time was so much fun that no one wanted to leave!

What other events has BassCoast been involved over the last year?

The Bass Coast girls took some time off to go to Burning Man. We then hosted WILD THINGS, our annual Halloween party, in North America’s largest Teepee. In December we produced CHURCH, the Bassnectar afterparty at the Dollhouse in Vancouver & shortly after we hosted New Years Eve in Whistler. Each event was really successful, which we attribute to the help of all our talented crew & friends who have transformed each venue, performed acrobatics, painted live, shared their music, photographed, cooked & cleaned up. Also thanks to Rebound Sound & Rocky Mountain for their always reliable production services. We are looking forward to this year!
