sub⎹div podcast 3.0: Hrdvsion (plus Q&A!)

The latest instalment of the sub⎹div podcast comes courtesy of Victoria’s finest: Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson. Those who saw Skream in Victoria last September likely caught Jonson opening with his amazing set of live original techno throbbings. Combining glitchy sound aesthetics with an amazing knack for bringing the weird funk, Hrdvsion straddles the blurry line between schizoid post-idm adventures & sleek techno dancefloor smashers.

Cause I Love You by Hrdvsion

Jonson’s lengthy catalog of leftfield post-idm techno is well known to many West Coast electronic fans, but in 2009, Jonson took his musical maelstrom to Berlin, for obvious reasons. After a healthy year of touring & writing, this May sees the release of Where Did You Just Go?, Hrdvsion’s first full length on Wagon Repair (the techno label co-run by his older brother Mathew). Already receiving spins from the likes of Martyn, Erol Alkan & John Tejada, Jonson is primed for a killer 2010. His sub|div podcast is  the type of mix you’d expect from Hrdvsion; classic acid, leftfield bass music, a BC banger & a brand new tune from his upcoming record. We had a chat with him through the ether – peep the Q&A, plus the DL after the jump…

Soooo… new record out! How are you feeling about your first proper full length for Wagon Repair?

Very happy. I have wanted to put out a full length for a long time now. So happy it is happening with Wagon Repair & also at this time while I am in Europe.

Were there any specific influences guiding the writing of it or did tunes just naturally develop?

I want to make people dance. Some [tunes] are more obvious, some are for tweeker heads & some are for rainy days, but all are for the butt, with the exception of “Captivated Heart” & “Cause I Love You”, those are obviously the tunes I put on there just for myself.

Has Berlin affected your creative process at all? Do you find the city & culture inspiring or distracting?

I feel relaxed here & so the music has changed, but I think my creative process has remained the same. It is always inspiring to be surrounded by possibility.

What’s the first single going to be? Any remixes on the way…?

We are releasing a 6 song EP version of the album on 12″ . There might be remixes one day, but at the moment I am going to relax for a little while. This album took a lot out of me.

You’re notorious for side projects – what else is cooking in the kitchen?

Weeeeellllll, I think Starting Teeth is working on a new EP that will probably get us in a lot of trouble! Midnight Operator (Jonson’s pairing with his brother, techno giant Mathew) is doing a full length for Wagon Repair & there is some secret stuff that I would like to tell you about, but is also very iffy on the legal side sooooo… :) Hints include: Star Wars, Whitney Houston & hardcore rave!!
